Product Description
Japanese for Busy People is the most popular Japanese language textbook series in the world. With over 20 components including texts, workbooks, CDs, videos and teacher's manuals, it is also one of the most comprehensive. Now, a decade after its first revision, the entire series is being redesigned, updated and consolidated to meet the needs of 21st-century students and businesspeople who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as effectively as possible in a limited amount of time.

The book features not only a sleek, new design but also a unit structure that groups thematically linked lessons together, making it easier than ever to learn Japanese.
Moreover, it now comes with a CD containing audio for the dialogues and listening exercises from the text. The exercises in the book have also been thoroughly revised to incorporate more comprehension and production tasks. Many of these exercises are illustrated, making for a stimulating learning experience, and the purpose of each one is clearly stated.

This first of three volumes introduces "survival Japanese"-the absolute minimum amount of Japanese needed to live in Japan. Thus, the vocabulary and grammatical items it introduces are limited to about a third of what is typically introduced in a first-year course. In addition, the book features notes on Japanese culture intended to expand the learner's understanding of Japan, its customs and people.

Japanese for Busy People I is available in two formats: romanized and kana.
The Romanized Version uses romanized Japanese throughout, with kana in the Opening Dialogues of each lesson.
The Kana Version-exposing students to hiragana and katakana from the very beginning-uses only kana. The content of the two books is otherwise exactly the same.

The companion volume, Japanese for Busy People 1: The Workbook for the Revised 3rd Edition contains a variety of illustrated exercises for mastering the basic sentence patterns presented in the main text.

5 out of 5 stars Best beginner's Japanese book around   July 11, 2010
Fabrice Lesaffre
I can't give this book - the whole series in fact - enough stars. It is truly outstanding, and was a lifesaver when I lived in Japan.

First, some context: I've studied Japanese and Chinese at Harvard, Yale & Princeton, so I've seen quite a few methodologies for teaching East Asian languages. My verdict is that "Japanese for Busy People" is by far the BEST AND MOST ENJOYABLE.

It's the best methodology, because it tries really hard to introduce grammar and vocab at a manageable pace, and in a practical context. I found it ideal for self-study - very clear explanations, in just the right amount of detail. Whenever I would study a lesson, I would end up using what I'd learnt within a few days, sometimes a few hours! Most other methodologies (for example Nakama 1 & 2) are very overwhelming - they rely on rote memorization and try to force feed every grammatical detail, so much that nothing "sticks".

It's also the most enjoyeable methodology, which is VERY IMPORTANT because you want a book that you're going to WANT to pick up during your free time. The enjoyment comes from the excellent presentation, clear explanations, relevant subject-matter, as well as the CD. I found myself listening to the lessons on my iPod when I was walking on the street, and opening the book whenever I had 5 minutes in the subway. I was amazed at how quickly I was learning.

All in all, I've never found an easier methodology that gave me so quickly a smattering of "fluency" with only a beginner's range of vocab and grammar. The only caveat is that you really need to get to book 2 to dive into the grammar.

P.S. I recommend the Romanized version over the Kana version. Wait till book 2 to tackle the Japanese alphabet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start   March 28, 2010

The best all around series for serious at home learners. This book will teach you the very basics. It does not get very in depth about grammar and such. However, if you are just beginning and have little to no Japanese language experience this will get your feet wet and leave you with a basic understanding of the language and the ability to speak and understand some basics as well.

I was very ambitious, as I want to really learn the language well, and tried some of the larger more in-depth texts. For at home learning they were simply overwhelming. After completing this series I am now going back to them for more advanced study and they are much easier to understand and use now.

I recommend for the serious learner to also use Japanese for Busy People I: Workbook; includes CD (Bk. 1) and Japanese for Busy People: Kana Workbook Incl. 1 CD (This teaches you to read and write Hiragana and Katakana) if you are willing to spend the extra money also get Japanese for Busy People I: Kana Version includes CD (Japanese for Busy People Series) (Bk. 1) (This has the same content as the Romanized text book, but written in Kana) which will reinforce the your Kana skills but you will not be able to use it until you have begun to learn Kana first.

If you wish to continue with the series, as I highly recommend, you MUST learn Kana as Japanese for Busy People II: Third Revised Edition incl. 1 CD (Bk. 2) and Japanese for Busy People III: Third Revised Edition incl. 1 CD (v. 3) are both in Kana. Good luck and have fun! FYI- This series was developed by AJALT a group created by the Ministry of Education in Japan.

This book is great, It has helped me learn so far so I am able to keep up with my class. The audio CD is great to listen to and easy to get used to. I had no problem beginning with the Romanized version, I am now transitioning onto using the Kana version. I recommend it to anyone beginning their studies in the Japanese Language.

I picked up this book in college as required text book for class. Listening to the CD will help the reader through un familiar sounding phrases and greetings. Used separately the book will help a beginner practice sounding out words in the most typical everyday lifestyle from asking directions to buying stamps at the post office, to counting items in an department store.
