needs an index May 10, 2010 Christine Shugrue (Woodbury, Ct USA) I agree that this book is great for those times you might want to sit and read through the text. But in fact it has a more to offer than it can easily deliver. The research is deep and thorough but inaccessible in its current lay out...While reading Treasure Island I wanted to know what all the pirate means but alas i can't find the phrases quickly enough as I must search through ...curses...oaths...greeting etc.The structure of the book is too cumbersome to take full advantage of all it offers..I hope a new edition will come around then this pirates primer can take its proper place as a useful reference on the shelf near the dictionary. The work here deserves that spot...Now what exactly is "the black spot" any way ? Still looking through the book....
Pirate plain talk May 1, 2010 Scott P. Nielsen (Portsmouth, VA) This is a good lexicon for learning and understanding the source of many terms one might hear today. Not necesarrily all Piratical. Much of the content would have been heard an any vessell of the old sailing days. A must for any maritime librar.
The Pirate Primer April 13, 2010 Michael (Fort Worth, Texas United States) This is a GREAT Primer... This book takes a detailed look at "Pirate Lingo" as used in Movies and Theater and explains the character and reasons behind the language. It pretty much tells about every single usage of each word or group of words.
This is a technical book and well worth the money.
Buy this and you've bought the treasure.
Arrgh tis a fine book for pirate learnin! January 18, 2010 Captain Short Beard (Utah) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
As captain of a land locked vessel, tis a great effort to keep me pirate speakin fine tuned, like a sweet sea chanty from the ol cat saw. This be the finest book of salty sea speach that any pirate, or land lubber could ever wish. Aye een Neptune his self couldn't produce a finer guide. So take it from a salty old sea dog, you'll be wantin to purchase this fine book. If'n ye don't, and I meet ye, thar be a cat o nine or the plank for ye!
IT FITS January 15, 2010 RBI (UTAH) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Truly great, entertaining, hilarious, serious and wonderful book. It so fits too, a former litigator and FBI agent, of course he'd be an expert on piracy. Thanks George, I'm buying several for friends in the legal profession!
