Product Description
After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans thousands of people lost their keepsakes and family treasures forever. As residents started to rebuild their lives The Times-Picayune of New Orleans became a post-hurricane swapping place for old recipes that were washed away in the storm. The newspaper has compiled 250 of these delicious authentic recipes along with the stories about how they came to be and who created them. Cooking Up a Storm includes the very best of classic and contemporary New Orleans cuisine from seafood and meat to desserts and cocktails. But it also tells the story recipe by recipe of one of the great food cities in the world and the determination of its citizens to preserve and safeguard their culinary legacy.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of terrific recipes, great story   July 10, 2010

This book is terrific. The concept brings tears to my eyes, and the recipes are fantastic. The first weekend I had this cookbook I made 5 recipes from it (the chicken salad, the Better than Better Cheddar, the Spaghetti and Meatballs, the Creole Mustard and the Creole Mayonnaise). All of them were delicious. I've been looking for a basic chicken salad recipe with specific quantities listed for ages and this is a very good one. My husband is over the moon for the mustard, while the Better than Better Cheddar is my personal favorite. It's a delicious change-up from pimento cheese and would be PERFECT fare for a baby shower/bridal shower (I'm from North Carolina, and I'm pretty sure some form of chicken salad or pimento cheese is a legal requirement at showers here). I would buy this book for that recipe alone. At any rate, it's too darn hot to make a lot of the recipes in the book right now, but come fall I plan on trying out every gumbo recipe in it.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Louisiana HOME to me   July 10, 2010
Carolyn Fineran
This was the cookbook I ordered when I wanted to re create the cooking of my growing up in Mandeville, La days. My mother, Miz Myrtle, clipped out recipes from the Times Picayune often; as I have gone through old papers, salvaged from Katrina, mildew, time and Louisiana humidity, I would often find a recipe that she would make for us...like the rum cake, on crumbled old newsprint. It was fun to plan a wonderful New Year's gathering for a bunch of us misplaced, living in Colorado, Louisianaians with our favorite 'home cookin'. Loved it, it feels like home just reading it.

5 out of 5 stars barbecue shrimp   May 29, 2010
bibliophile (Nashville TN)
I was curious about the barbecue shrimp recipe when I saw that it contained one pound of butter and three tablespoons of cayenne. We made it for a New Orleans-themed dinner party. It was by far the best dish there even though we had many small fires when we were broiling the shrimp. We licked the pan clean. Worth the price of the book!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking and learning   April 4, 2010

I purchased this cookbook for myself after seeing it at a neighbor's house. I was happy I could replace my favorite Times-Picayune recipes in such an appealing format. I love the history of the recipes, too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes!   February 8, 2010
Tiphanie Clark (baton rouge, la usa)
This was a fantastic buy. I purchased a few to give as gifts to my New Orleans friends and families, and I kept one for myself. The recipes are great. They are the Times Picayune lost recipes from Katrina (hence the play on words in the title.) I found so many that I had no idea were allowed to be "public information." If you have a nostalgia for old famous New Orleans recipes, this is the book to have. The bookstores were selling them for about 10 times the price I was able to get them here. I always check amazon first, and I haven't been disappointed yet.
