Amazon.com Review Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

An affront to Native Americans August 17, 2010 Jack Enright 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had the opportunity to read this book and found it to be a large pile of superstitious gossip. First of all, Native americans do not regard totems to be taken so lightly. In Native culture of any tribe to gain the protection of a guardian spirit which is usually an animal, a person must go on a quest. This is usually referred in English as a Vision quest sometimes that involves taking certain herbs and going on a trek to unknown territory. For the Nez Perce a guardian was known as a wyakin. To obtain a wyakin was a great boon and some would go for a lifetime without one. So Mr. Andrews says in his nonsensical book that any suburbanite can just go out an pick some unfortunate animal that they happen to spot, that is if they dont run it down in their SUV, to be their personal savior of the day maybe even a week. He calls them totems rather loosely, that is a word associated with Northwest Natives who make totem poles. Now the people of the Northwest make totem poles to honor their ancestors or shame their neighbors who owe them goods. Totems in the form of animals remind the People of their shared life in Nature alongside other creatures. These other animals have a world of their own which is not human or live by human rules. These animals dont know anything about Greek or Roman mythology, witches or druids yet they do very well without them. So why do we need Mr. Andrews to pollute our Native American culture with decadent European ideas? On the front cover Mr Andrews mentions spiritual and magical powers of all creatures great ana small. Wow! Thats an eyecatcher! Bound to sell some books that way. But should we take for granted that nature will grant us these powers to us for just a casual glance at a bird or squirrel we might notice in our backyard? Seems farfetched at best. Take for example people who sell dream catchers at swap meets, they swear to you that these designs will catch your bad dreams, sort of like XMAS all over again. If you want to understand the ways of a spider you must spend time watching what a spider does. I know because every day at my Nursery I would watch insects, spiders and birds around my flowers. When you come to know the way of animals it is no longer superstition but knowledge, something you have observed first hand. The web the spider weaves can be the web of the universe in your dreams. Native People live close to Nature, that is those that are fortunate today to live the way of their ancestors. To live by the Red Path is the Middle Way which leads to the New World.
Animal-Speak: The Spirtual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small July 27, 2010 Paularose Am very pleased with this book. I am enjoying reading it, and it is the type of book I will continue to re-read and reference to quite abit. It has made me look at things in a very different way.
Animal Speaks July 16, 2010 Judith Lanier I enjoy reading this book very much. Immense insight to what I see and experience when outside exploring or just looking out my window.
Best of the Best July 12, 2010 Reiki Jan (Cincinnati, OH) It is unfortunate that Ted Andrews is no longer with us. His books are excellent, very informative and clearly written. Animal Speak is by far THE best book about animal totems and spirits and the place they have in our lives. When a butterfly lands on your car windshield every day for a week you can find out what it means in this book. You can learn the spiritual significance of more animals, birds, insects, and reptiles than I have found ANYWHERE else. This book differentiates myth from fact and will teach you ways to read signs and omens in nature which will help you develop a higher perception of nature. My husband purchased this book and we kept passing it back and forth so I finally bought my own. I was going to highlight the 'special' parts but decided not to since practically the entire book would be highlighted. I cannot encourage you enough to buy this book if the subject interests you, It is truly incredible.
Very pleased... May 30, 2010 Bbop (Middle Village, New York United States) ... with this book. Gives a very interesting insight into your persona/interests but from a different perspective than the more run of the mill personality tests, etc... A great read
